Platform Engineer roles popping up everywhere. Is DevOps really dead this time? Is this just DevOps 2.0 in disguise?
Let’s be clear: This isn’t a brand new concept, but more about a focused shift – and the name change helps leverage that “shiny new thing” effect.
So, what’s really going on? It’s less about replacing DevOps and more about focusing on the “Platform” and good Engineering practices – tangible outcomes, not just culture.
Because culture + action = true progress! We’re evolving, not abandoning the core DevOps principles.
For years, we’ve talked about DevOps culture. Now it’s time to focus on providing value! And the right approach is to deliver a well-engineered platform.
Platform Engineering is about:
- Focusing on the Platform Itself: Treating the underlying infrastructure as a product.
- Engineering Practices: Applying core software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations. Think design, testing, and maintainability first.
- Empowering Developers: Building internal platforms that enable developers to self-serve and move faster.
And AI changes the game. It changes it a lot. AI makes creating new apps easier than ever. This means a massive increase in the number of applications. A well-designed, scalable platform is now essential to manage this explosion of new apps.
So, is this the future we really need? Does this name change help?
